A widely acknowledged framework for promoting education in India is the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). It was sanctioned by the Union Cabinet on 29th July 2020, and it replaced the 34-year-old NPE, in 1986.

The NEP 2020 objectives are to be responsible for an impartial and comprehensive education method that will transform India into a knowledge-based society. Primary childhood, school, university, vocational education, and teacher preparation are among the aspects of education that the policy emphasizes.

The NEP 2020 aims to bring about several changes that are expected to benefit students pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees. Here are some of the ways in which the policy is likely to benefit them:

Flexibility in Choice of Subjects

NEP 2020 grants students the freedom to choose subjects based on their interests, regardless of their academic stream. This shift encourages interdisciplinary learning, enabling students to explore diverse fields and broaden their knowledge horizons.

Integrated Undergraduate Programs

To expedite the completion of bachelor's and master's degrees, NEP 2020 introduces integrated undergraduate programs. By seamlessly integrating these degrees, students can save time and delve deeper into their chosen fields of study.

Embracing a Multidisciplinary Approach

NEP 2020 advocates for a multidisciplinary approach to education. Students now have the chance to gain insights into different subjects, fostering a well-rounded perspective. This method encourages the growth of individuals who possess a diverse skill set, enabling them to adapt to the evolving job market.

Promoting Research

The policy emphasizes the significance of research and encourages students to pursue research-oriented programs. By fostering a research culture in educational institutions, NEP 2020 seeks to nurture innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students.

Skill Based Education

NEP 2020 underscores the importance of skill-based education and promotes the development of vocational courses. By integrating practical skills into the curriculum, students can acquire industry-relevant expertise, enhancing their employability and readiness for the job market. Notably, the introduction of an exit policy for BTech, BSc Computer Science, BCA, and MCA programs is a key feature of NEP 2020.

The policy grants students the opportunity to exit with a certificate, diploma, or degree, depending on the duration of their learning.

The exit policy has several benefits for students.

Flexibility

Students have the flexibility to choose their desired exit point based on their academic journey, allowing them to explore alternative career paths or pursue higher education.

Recognition

Exit points offer students formal recognition for their educational achievements, even if they do not complete the entire duration of a program. This recognition can open doors to employment and further educational opportunities.

Employment Opportunities

By earning certificates or diplomas during their academic journey, students can showcase their skills and knowledge to potential employers, enhancing their chances of securing suitable employment.

Reduced Financial Burden

The exit policy allows students to tailor their educational journey based on their financial capabilities. It provides an opportunity to gain valuable qualifications without incurring the full costs associated with completing an entire degree program.

NEP 2020 aims to improve education quality and make it accessible to all students in India. To achieve these results, educators, policymakers, and stakeholders throughout the education system must collaborate.

NEP 2020 has set guidelines and recommendations for the development of education in India, which are expected to be implemented by universities and institutions offering various courses and programs. The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), a national facility, would use an appropriate "credit transfer" mechanism to promote curricular adaptation and interdisciplinary educational flexibility of students across the country's Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).  Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) may specify the maximum validity duration for credits earned of seven years.
